About Smart Step

Smart Step is here because of my basic belief of why we are here in life. I believe we are here to make a difference to those around us. I believe we should leave the world a better place than when we entered it.

I believe that unhealthy money hampers our ability to do what we are here for. It creates stress, health problems, hampers our ability to focus and make decisions and distracts us from our values and priorities. I believe that by taking control of our money we can fulfill our dreams, build a stronger self confidence, and empower ourselves to be the best we can be. This helps us to be better parents, children, spouses, employees, business owners and ultimately a better person in every area. This leads us to making a difference to those around us and making the world a better place than we found it.

So how do we help? At the most basic level we help by teaching personal finance.  However, we also incorporate life purpose and money emotions into the teachings because these play a crucial role in building a life that allows us to make a difference. Ignoring why we are here and why we react to money the way we do defeats the purpose of becoming financially healthy so we can be the best us possible.

More specifically Smart Step works on a process that is four distinct yet intertwined steps they are:

1.    Determine what you want from life and your money. Without knowing where you are going or why you are sacrificing to win you will not have the motivation or desire to keep going when things get tough. By knowing what you want you have extra energy, passion, purpose and drive to keep going.
2.    Have the financial basics in control and operating well. These include: living on less than you make, establishing an emergency fund, protecting credit from theft and abuse, estate planning, debt reduction and insurance. Once these are in place then you have the security and direction to successfully invest for your future.
3.    Learn about and begin to invest. Learning to invest is not an overnight task. By taking the time and experience to learn about investing you will develop the skills and knowledge to succeed. You did not learn to speak, read or do your profession overnight, investing is no different.
4.    Deal with the emotional issues that arise as you work through each of the above steps. We all encounter road blocks, many of them self imposed by facing these and dealing with them we grow faster in our ability to be financially successful. No matter how much money you have if you are not content with yourself you will not be happy.
